Chalice is one of Jamaica’s most respected roots reggae bands, originally emerging during reggae’s influential 1980s era. Known for their rich harmonies, conscious songwriting, and dynamic live performances, the band helped shape the sound of modern Jamaican reggae. Today, Chalice continues its legacy through new recordings, international touring, and a renewed commitment to delivering authentic reggae music to audiences worldwide. Bridging generations of reggae lovers, the band remains dedicated to preserving the culture while pushing the music forward.
The powerhouse Reggae group CHALICE was given life on April 1, 1980 in the Gibraltar Hills of St. Mary, Jamaica. Seven young, talented musicians of diverse social and musical backgrounds pooled their resources to develop a fresh, new, pop-oriented reggae sound in the prime of the Bob Marley Era.
By 1981 CHALICE was already considered one of the most spectacular live acts in Jamaica with a repertoire that consisted mostly of their own material and some originally interpreted cover songs. CHALICE honed their craft by playing every conceivable stage in Jamaica as well as opening for notable US acts such as The Commodores, The Spinners, Eddie Kendricks and The Four Tops, crowning the year by being one of the headliners on the world-famous Reggae Sunsplash Festival.
In 1982 their debut album BLASTED spawned two chart toppers in Jamaica. “I STILL LOVE YOU” stayed seven weeks at number one and “GOOD TO BE THERE” broke the top ten the following year. Their second offering “STANDARD PROCEDURE” also had critical and chart success with the powerful “I’M TRYING” and the popular “CAN’T DUB’ riding the Jamaican Top Ten Chart.
Legendary Jamaican Reggae Band Chalice announces California tour dates and the release of a new Ssngle “House of Music” featuring Prezident Brown. Following powerful performances at The Jamaica Benefit concert inside the Hard Rock Hotel in Miramar Fl and Rebel Salute USA the iconic reggae group CHALICE continues its comeback with new music and landmark California performances.
For reggae fans across the West Coast, these performances represent a unique opportunity to experience one of Jamaica’s most influential bands live as they enter a bold new chapter.
Formed in Jamaica and celebrated for classics such as : Good To Be There, I’m Trying, Paise Him, Dangerous Disturbances and many more that helped define the reggae landscape of the 1980s, Chalice earned a reputation for exceptional musicianship, dynamic stage performances, and a fearless commitment to artistic originality. While many bands from the era have faded into history, Chalice’s story continues to evolve.
Today, guided by founding member Wayne Armond and early member drummer Phanso Wilson, the band has assembled a revitalized lineup that honors its legacy while embracing the future. The group’s latest single, “House of Music,” captures that spirit perfectly. Featuring acclaimed reggae veteran Prezident Brown, the track celebrates the unifying power of music, culture, and community while showcasing Chalice’s signature blend of lyrics, infectious grooves, and timeless musicianship.

CHALICE took their live act to Europe under the guidance of K.P. Schlinetz, and a third album STAND UP was released to critical acclaim. The single “DANGEROUS DISTURBANCES” hit home in Jamaica becoming another major hit. During this period, CHALICE became the first reggae band to perform in Istanbul, Turkey opening the gate for many other reggae artists. Then CHALICE turned their attention to the United States and Mexico. CHALICE made their first major United States tour on the REGGAE SUNSPLASH 10th ANNIVERSITY TOUR” in 1987. A fourth album CROSSFIRE was released in Jamaica only and the hit “REVIVAL TIME” was Chalice’s second number one single at home. 1988 saw CHALICE taking their sound to Africa and back to the United States of America where a fifth album CATCH IT was released (Rohit).
From 1989 to 1990 CHALICE toured Mexico extensively playing to sold out houses all over the country and in 1990 the sixth album “SI MI YA” was released in Jamaica. This popular album was voted ALBUM OF THE YEAR by the Jamaican Music Awards Committee and the single “DANCE HALL MONIC” was a breakthrough piece combining classical elements with a hardcore dance hall rhythm.
In December 1990 CHALICE was invited to headline the first “MEXICO SUNSPLASH” in Mexico City and received an overwhelming response from critics and the public. 1991 saw CHALICE working within Jamaica and the other Caribbean territories including Antigua, Cayman and St. Maarten. Two major changes took place within the group at the end of 1991. Drummer ‘Phanso’ Wilson and lead singer Trevor Roper migrated to the United States. Trevor was replaced by the young and dynamic Dean Stephens and Phanso was replaced by Wayne ‘C Sharp’ Clarke. Their debut with CHALICE was on the “Picante” television show on Channel 11 in Mexico City, a program which was aired throughout Latin America and the United States.
CHALICE worked steadily into the 90’s and recorded their seventh album “TUFF ENUFF” which was released in Austria. The group took a collective decision to garner new ideas and expand their individual creativity, and in the mid-90s members of the group hooked up with other reggae legends. Wayne toured with the legendary Jimmy Cliff on guitar. Alla and Keith toured with the West African Reggae King, Alpha Blond. Mikey toured with Third World, but just prior to the group’s Second Advent, Mikey was shot and killed near his home in Kingston.
After an outstanding return to the Jamaican stage at “Symphony Under The Stars” in ’07. CHALICE has performed to rave reviews on shows such as The Wellness Fest, Rebel Salute, The Air Jamaica Jazz & Blues Festival, The Calabash Festival and Asafa Powell’s Charity Show “On Tracks”. Apart from Wayne, Alla, Keith, the electrifying Dean and Desi, original members, the Group currently includes the outstanding Stevie “G” Golding, a veteran of Peter Tosh’s Word, Sound and Power who also tours with Israel Vibration and Roots Radics. In 2010 Chalice recorded and released their 8th studio album “Let it Play” on Tad’s Records and Launched this album in Georgetown, Grand Cayman and continued to appear on high profile shows in Jamaica, Jazz and Blues and Reggae Sumfest being some of the biggest.
In 2016 CHALICE released their 9th studio album “A SONG” where they re-recorded 14 of their most requested tracks. All the tracks feature duets with reggae greats, the likes of Ernie Smith, Tanya Stephens, Taurus Riley, Tanto Metro and Devonte and fresh new voices like Ari Lopez, Wild Life, Sky Grass and other brilliant artists. This album is distributed by VPal music.
In 2019 band leader Wayne Armond migrated to Florida and once again joined forces with Phonso Wilson on drums to kick start this exciting Next Generation CHALICE as they continue to record and perform live shows.
